Soft tissue surgery covers procedures on organs, skin and body cavities rather than bone — mass removal, bladder stone removal, foreign body retrieval and spay or neuter. At Surgery For Pets in Delray Beach these are performed as same-day outpatient procedures, with most patients discharged the same evening.
What this involves
Soft tissue procedures range from routine to urgent. What they share is that outcomes depend heavily on surgical planning and tissue handling. A mass removed with clean margins the first time rarely needs a second surgery.
Symptoms
These are the signs owners most often describe before a pet is referred to us. Any one of them is worth a conversation.
- A lump that is growing, changing, or newly firm
- Repeated straining to urinate, or blood in the urine
- Vomiting that will not settle, especially after chewing a toy
- Sudden abdominal swelling or pain
- A wound that will not close
How we approach it

What to expect afterwards

- Incision checks at home for 10–14 days
- Restricted activity until the incision is fully closed

- Biopsy results discussed with you as soon as they arrive

In most cases, no. We are an outpatient surgical centre, and the large majority of soft tissue patients are discharged the same evening once they are awake, comfortable and stable. If a patient needs overnight observation we will tell you before surgery, not after.
We look at how quickly it is growing, where it sits, and what a fine needle aspirate shows. Some masses can safely be monitored. Others are best removed while they are small, because a small mass can be taken with clean margins in one straightforward procedure.
